Midtown - Atlanta
Midtown is situated between Downtown and Buckhead, providing easy access to both business centers and to the 135 office buildings within the district.
Midtown is cosmopolitan. Midtown is hot. And its growth has recently jumped west over the Downtown Connector into Atlantic Station and surrounding neighborhoods.
About 36,000 people live within one mile of the 10th and Peachtree streets intersection. Add another two miles to the radius and 138,000 people call the area home. The daytime workforce is 288,000.
Midtown stands apart from all other parts of the city because of the unparalleled collection of arts and cultural activities: the Fox Theater, the High Museum of Art, the Atlanta Symphony and a host of others.
Metropolis933 Peachtree Street, Midtown
The Metropolis is an art deco masterpiece that rises 21 stories above Peachtree Street in the heart of Midtown. The building was completed in 2003, and studios currently start in the 140s. One bedrooms start around the 190s and two bedrooms start around high $200s.
The building proved to be a turning point for Atlanta developers bringing with it the era of glass-skinned concrete construction with every unit boasting floor-to-ceiling windows. The success of the Metropolis condos provided a blueprint for future Novare and Wood projects including the Eclipse in Buckhead, the Spire in Midtown, City Center in Buckhead, Twelve Atlantic Station and Twelve Centennial Park. Other developers took the hint, too. The Buckhead Grand, Plaza Midtown and 905 Juniper followed the same pattern.
So what is it about Metropolis that makes the building special?
There might not be one key ingredient, but this Web page is intended to offer insight into why every one of the 498 condo units had been sold less than 11 months after hitting the market.
The Metropolis condos are located a block from Marta's 10th Street station and the Federal Reserve. It's just a few blocks from Piedmont Park and is surrounded by restaurants and retail, including a strip of shops located on the first floor.
The Metropolis won a 2004 Golden Shoe Award, from the pedestrian advocate group PEDS, for pedestrian-friendly design in architecture.
The Metropolis has a half-acre park on the 7th floor, including a pool and urban garden. Peachtree Street was closed to hoist 15 full-sized trees onto the deck with a crane. The event attracted the attention of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, which photographed and wrote about the tree-planting. At the time, the raised pool-deck was a novelty. Today, it's an amenity that few developers would consider leaving out.
Inside, the Metropolis condos have state-of-the-art technology including wi-fi computer access on the pool deck and in the club room. Metropolis also has a security system that some visitors describe as Fort Knox, but residents appreciate for the safety it offers. Residents can only enter the floor where they live and the amenities level. Guests are assigned a passcode for the elevator and are also allowed to enter only their destination floor and the amenities level.
The Metropolis has a workout room with showers and dressing rooms for men and women. The M Club has flat-screen TVs, video games, cable and Internet access for residents and their guests.
All condo units in the building have ethernet wall connections that provide speeds up to 10Mb per second. Biltmore told Metropolis residents that Internet speeds are up to 300 percent faster than Comcast cable and up to 600 percent faster than BellSouth DSL.
A full-service concierge is available 24 hours a day at Metropolis.
Metropolis was designed by Smallwood, Reynolds, Stewart, and built by R. J. Griffin & Company. Construction began in May of 2001 and took two years to finish both towers.
There are 14 configurations of studios in the building and a total of 498 condo units.
Interiors of the studio, one- and two-bedroom designs feature flat and two-story layouts.
Among the accents are hardwood or concrete floors, exposed ductwork, 9-foot ceilings, and balconies or terraces.
Kitchens were originally appointed with stainless steel appliances, a microwave, granite counters, breakfast bars and dark or light maple cabinetry. Baths are tiled, and many master baths have garden tubs and separate showers. Laundry connections are in each unit.
Each floor has trash chutes and service elevators. Storage units are available on each floor and on the parking decks.
The towers are linked by a spacious lobby and a seventh-floor terrace.
In April 2003, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution compiled these facts about the building: --- # Other name ideas considered: Centrus, Vistia and Luminance. Folks started moving in on November 5, 2002. The two-tower complex replaced five one-story buildings.
# Peachtree Street was closed to place 1,000-pound tree planters and 15 full-size trees on the half-acre park on the 7th floor.
# The first residents -- two women -- moved furniture into their eighth-floor apartment themselves.
# No. 1714 is the only penthouse on the 17th floor. It was listed as the most expensive unit at $699,000 and has a private rock garden and the largest private patio.
# Collective Soul's vocalist and guitarist Ed Roland looked at an apartment on 19, which has some two-story residences.
# There are 40,000 square feet of retail, restaurant and entertainment space. Storefronts face Peachtree Street. Universal Gear (men's clothing and accessories) signed the first retail lease -- 3,000 square feet.
